This won’t take me long to spell out. I have said on my podcast recently, and on Twitter, that libertarianism has always had an '“atheist problem.” I would list the top three libertarians as Ludwig von Mises, Murray Rothbard and Ayn Rand (yes, I know she hated the term but whatever). Of those three, Rand was the most openly hostile to Christianity and faith in general. And her detractors despised her.
Much of her attitude carries over to modern libertarianism. My main Facebook account is really my professional account to promote the podcast and anything else I have going on at the time. As 99.9% of the people I connect with identify as libertarian/anarchist/voluntaryist, my Facebook feed is often a sewer of mostly anti-Christian rhetoric, with a few derogatory remarks toward other faiths as well. Here’s the main issue: if 90% of the population adheres to some form of faith, why in the ever-loving fuck are you trying to alienate them? Do you think that your meme game is so strong that they’ll abandon their faith on the spot? If you do, you’re a fucking idiot.
Honestly, these people who are on their own personal crusade against faith (and who if pressed are usually the most uneducated rubes when it comes to the subject) are the literal enemy of liberty. Why would someone who has faith want anything to do with an ideology whose members are calling them morons for believing in a “sky daddy.” Apparently these edgelords (the irony of me calling someone else that) believe they know what people need in their lives better than the people do. Yeah, that’s called hubris.
If you want to be on the side of the “woke left” and commies just go join them and you can tell people how they should live their lives and what they should believe. It’s literally what you people sound like.
I've been proposing promoting private covenant communities for pious religious people since, oh, about 1981 as libertarian outreach. "Libertarians" either do not respond or engage or they just start calling names. No dope or dopers, no rock n roll, no gays. Whatever they want. Just because I think it should be promoted does not mean I'd want to live there.
The NSArwarkians/Fakertarians are enthusiastic Christian/family values haters. That's why they hate Tom Woods and Dave Smith. And they really do HATE.
Good points Pete. Atheism has a religious-type fervor to it and frankly it's also not practical to think we can make a dent without the Christians (or other religious types) in tow. Most of the serious converts to libertarianism come from the right, so meet them halfway at least.
