I'm currently developing 9 acres of land in a farming community in South Carolina (county I was raised in) and will go a certain distance towards self sustaining but in no way is our plan to just drop out of the world. Property taxes alone will keep you in the US dollar economy unless you like buying land and having it confiscated every couple of years.
I still believe the #1 political goal in the country, which can be accomplished down the county level, is to abolish the property tax on land / residences. This at least means people CAN drop out of that system of US dollars, forever.
