One thing I have not seen addressed is the fact that this is supposed to take place five years after the 2nd Death Star is destroyed and the Empire is decimated, yet many locations are worse off or the same. The overwhelming majority of the locations he has visited are doing poorly. For example, Tatooine appears to be more of a shithole. The planet the series opened on (S01E01) was like Somalia right after the collapse.
When I was doing work in Romania shortly after they overthrew Ceaușescu, people were clamoring for someone like him to come back because they knew nothing else. They just elected his old cronies. By the time I got there the leaders were hanging their hats on leeching off the European Union (they eventually got their wish).
I’m kind of happy that Favreau is telling the story as such. The old line, “before you tear down a wall, find out why it was built” comes to mind. Michael Boldin says that if we force people to live as we want them to in our society that’s a “Libertarian Dictatorship.”
I think the main takeaway here is that not everyone is ready for the kind of responsibility liberty demands. We have to keep that in mind, always.
It was the same in Ukraine. I lived there for a couple of years. At least half of the people pined for the good ole days of the USSR. They'd rather have 1 potato guaranteed than have to work for a bag of potatoes. They'd rather wait in line all day, than pay one penny for faster health care.
I like how they portrayed that town on Tatooine. The empire left and warlords took over. So the people fought back on their own and pushed the warlords out and they ended up building an agorist/libertarian society. Then, they made a deal with a foe, to fight a common enemy.
This power vacuum is one of my favorite things about the show.
