There is nothing at all scientific to this number but I operate under the assumption that 35% of the population has been lost to mass formation. That number is HUGE. I believe that a dedicated 10% can move mountains (culture). 35% percent is an immovable object. And that number will only grow. If the next panic is COVID part 2 or climate change for example, expect that 35% to fall into line and become soldiers for the “cause”, again. WHEN that happens, we must be ready.
Understanding that the 35% is suffering mass formation (MF) and not a fear of the “current thing” is important. Operating under the belief that arguing the facts of the “current thing” will break them out of MF is foolish. It may some, but it’s the MF that needs to be addressed. How do we do that? I have no fucking clue. I don’t even know if there’s a technique anywhere that can do it. I’m open to suggestions.
If it can’t be broken, what can we do? First, build! Do what you need to do to get ready for the next “current thing”. If it means doing everything you can to pay off your property, concentrate on that. Figure out what you would need to get you through another lockdown because it’s a safe bet the next one will be worse.
Second, if you have all of that squared away, figure out who holds the power and influence around you who most shares your values. Chances are they are in a position to mitigate the effect of any hardships caused by what’s coming. Get their counsel, listen to them and don’t talk until they’re done.
Third, organize with like-minded people. I know, this is a no-brainer and something I’ve been talking about since the beginning of COVID but it’s even more applicable once you understand the implications of the 35% number. You need those people as a support network. And they need you! This is essential. Even a small group can generate enough resources to win.
Most of all - and I know with the tenor of this it may be hard not to - don’t despair. There is nothing more debilitating than the belief that all hope is lost. If it reaches the point where there’s no turning back, worrying about it now won’t make it any better then. Just stay focused. Do the work that needs to be done. Without that work there is no hope. Everyone working will change things. Even if it just kicks the can down the road and gives us a little more time to come up with a grand strategy. But maybe it’s already there and we are ignoring it. I’m open to anything.
I have started a group of guys who focus on canning and preserving food that we have grown or stock piled. The lockdown tactic will absolutely be used again regardless of the justification
Such great, practical and hopeful advice. Sometimes all we need, to get through moments of despair, is to identify what to work on next and then do it.
This quote has been helpful to me if I start getting lost in catastrophic thinking: "There are more things that frighten us than injure us, we suffer more in imagination than in reality." - Seneca
