I really need to chill the fuck out. I’ve let things get to me over the past few months and I’ve taken it out on people that are my friends. There’s no reason to be arguing or criticizing the tactics of people I agree with on 90% of things other than the typical “libertarian infighting bullshit.” And, at a time when the government has escalated their totalitarian impulses beyond what any of us could’ve predicted in January of 2020, those of us who recognize what they’ve done should work together. To those who are still living their lives, and living within their heads, as if it’s still January 2020, please wake the fuck up! I say that out of love. We need all hands on deck.
But, I will push back when I am told that libertarians have the answer to the “culture war” that has been openly dominating political and social life for a decade. Libertarians may have the answer but no one is listening. And believing we have a way to make them listen to us about the “culture wars,” when you they won’t listen to us on the economy, wars or desiring more liberty, is screaming at the clouds.
The Left has everything; academia, the press, the State and even “big tech.” If it’s prudent to march with the cultural Left when they were against the wars in the middle east, why is it now not advisable to side with the cultural Right when the political Left is doing shit like this?
No, “Ms. Levine” is not the first civilian sworn in as a United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps four-star admiral, but not recognizing why they were appointed to the position of Assistant Secretary for Health in the first place is willful blindness. This is the “progress” that is needed when you need to win the culture.
Even some libertarians, especially a few loud ones at the DC “think tanks", seek to downplay the teaching of “Critical Race Theory” in government schools (yes, I know, homeschool, homeschool, homeschool, understood). The administrators try to get around this by saying “we don’t have a course called critical race theory!” OK, but if you have a course whose outline is, “in this semester you will learn all things associated with the axiom, to each according to their needs, from each according to their abilities,” but they don’t call it communism, it’s still communism.
And then there’s the argument that Critical Race Theory isn’t teaching about all of the evils of slavery and how white people are to be hated yet that’s not what their academics are saying:
Yeah, I’m sorry, but there’s a real “culture war” going on, and, as I stated above, libertarians may be selling the answer to it, but no one’s buying. If libertarians who are, and it’s just facts, majority white males, and white males are being made out to be the villains of history, there may be a reason why the market for the ideology is fringe at best.
If you are someone who doesn’t realize this, please consider it. It is permeating every discussion including “climate change.” One can argue that “real people” aren’t buying into this. “Real people” do not possess power and normally don’t desire it, but those in charge are surrounded by people who have bought into this as the next way to increase their power. And unless libertarians recognize this, and get educated on it, they may as well be arguing about “bridges to nowhere in Alaska.” Or maybe arguing the irrelevant is just easier.
So, how do we fight a culture war? Shouting them down, or even making reasoned arguments against them, makes us homophobes and racists and bigots (oh my!). And they don't care if you are personally immune to their insipid insults, because IT WORKS! We're the bad guys in the eyes of the world because they OWN the eyes of the world.
I know you (PQ) know the Lions of Liberty guys, but I don't know if you listen. This week Brian McWilliams posted an episode of "Do Nothing Man", that was sort of revelatory for me. It's silly and corny and (self consciously?) heavy handed at times, but it laid out and skewered the whole cult of Fauchi/woke zombie culture narrative in a very palatable way. It's disarming and fun, but would probably feel a little dangerous and counter-culture-y to someone not already steeped in these ideas. My dad, who's a Trumper/Ben Shapiro "libertarian" (at best), would eat it up. I think it's just the sort of thing impressionable youths might pick up to shock their friends and piss off their parents. Brian McWilliams may not be the GG Allin of Libertarians, but he might just be GWAR.
I'm starting to actually believe this is a key way forward. I know you're already doing it with your docs, but working it in to popular culture is really the only way to turn the tide. Dave Smith and Robbie the Fire, Eric July, The Tuttle Twins, I'll even give Shapiro and that lady from the Mandalorian a tip of the hat (if they ever actually release something)... it's a small subculture, but it's growing. The fact that there's an audience at all is encouraging. We're the dirty hippies now, with our anti-establishment craziness, and the Covid-Regime is our Vietnam, the vax push is the draft, etc...
Basically just working out thoughts here. Does any of this make sense?
What do you make of Jack Dorsey's recent tweets that seem to indicate he's taken an interest in Austrian economics? To me, it looks like the post-Trump censorship pressure he's gotten has woken him up, and it also looks like he has no control over his own company. But, I've also seen people claiming it's a trap or a psy-op or something.
