Decentralized Films—a company I helped form with two friends in 2018—has begun production on our third project: a documentary about how veterans within the motorcycling community are helping other veterans in need. “Cycle Therapy” tells the story of veterans practicing mutual aid within a subculture that welcomes them. After WWII, many veterans returning home formed motorcycle clubs, some of which are still around today.
Since the war in Afghanistan ended, we’ve heard little about the suffering of veterans. At one point, we were hearing about 22 veterans committing suicide a day on average. The government has not provided adequate treatment options for those who risked it all. “Cycle Therapy” explores what happens when veterans help each other.
A couple combat veterans approached us a few months ago with the idea of doing a documentary on veteran bikers and their struggles. This wasn’t the kind of film we normally make, but we’d grown weary of only exploring ideas instead of telling stories through real people with real problems. Our intentions with Cycle Therapy are to show our audience what the government leaves behind when it goes to war: damaged people with broken dreams struggling to put their lives back together. What attracted us to this story was that ordinary people were taking it upon themselves to solve a problem involving people they identified with and cared about.
We’ve partnered with veterans who are using their network of nonprofits and fellow veterans to tell us their stories. We plan to conduct interviews and attend motorcycle events from spring to fall 2024. We’ve had great interest in the project, particularly from our partners’ 250,000 social media followers. A couple of the organizations we’ve been in touch with include the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, Throttle Therapy, and several others.
We’re asking you to join us once again to help bring a good film to fruition. Our $75,000 budget is more than we’ve asked before, but it’s necessary to create a high-quality project that reaches new audiences. You’re invited to help us tell an important story. Here’s the link to our crowdfund:
